U.S. Decision on Moroccan Sahara: Czech MEP Calls on EU to Support Positive Momentum

Brussels – The U.S. decision to recognize Morocco’s full sovereignty over its Saharan provinces continues to draw interest from European decision-makers and politicians.

In a question addressed to EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell, Czech MEP Tomáš Zdechovský of the EPP (European People’s Party) group stressed that “the situation in Africa has changed considerably in recent months, particularly following the recognition by the United States and Israel of the Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara.”

“Several EU member states such as Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania and Poland support Morocco’s claims to the Sahara”, he said, asking whether the European Commission’s External Action Service intended to move in the direction of these developments and support this positive dynamic.

The U.S. decision to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara has generated a broad momentum of support from several European countries where political leaders, opinion leaders and decision-makers encourage their governments to accompany this dynamic which aims to find a successful outcome to the artificial conflict over the Moroccan Sahara through the autonomy solution that enjoys the unanimous support of the international community.
